PRESENTATION: Bassano Vacchini is researcher at the State University
of Milan since 2004. His research work originates in studies on the foundations
of quantum theory, including non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics,
and presently concerns the quantum description of dissipation and decoherence,
faced focusing on covariance properties due to physical symmetries.

In the framework of open system theory we address the question
of a correct description of both decoherence and dissipation in quantum
mechanical systems, also keeping into account the fluctuation-dissipation
relationship. The theoretical description presented relies on quantum dynamical
semigroups and focuses on a specific type of system environment interaction,
allowing for a precise microphysical analysis, leading to the quantum counterparts
of both the classical linear Boltzmann equation and the Fokker-Planck equation
for the description of Brownian motion. Attention is devoted to both physical
and mathematical aspects of the problem, showing in particular the relevance
of group theoretical arguments based on symmetry and the connection to recent
interference experiment with fullerenes, aiming at a quantitative verification
of decoherence theory. |
