Abstract
A very much studied problem in Quantum Information is the issue of estimating and unknown quantum state from an isotropic source given a finite number of copies. It is known that a continuous covariant POVM gives an optimal fidelity.
Such POVM has infinite outcomes and therefore can not be implemented physically. I will present discretizations with a finite number of outcomes.
These are related to the notion of isotropic set of directions. This notion goes beyond its original scope and can be used for instance to compute the average fidelity of a quantum gate or the estimation of unknown unitary operations.
Interesting links with some other problems will also be presented.
